Strong earthquake in the United States, thousands of people without electricity

Millions of people in the western state of California have been without power since a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck. Reuters news.


The quake struck 25 miles (40 km) southwest of the port city of Eureka on Tuesday (December 20). However, no tsunami warning was issued. Apart from this, there were no immediate reports of any damage or casualties.

The epicenter of the earthquake early Tuesday morning was 7.4 miles southwest of Ferndale in Humboldt County, California, according to a statement from the US Geological Survey. The earthquake caused a fire at a power plant in Ferndale. In addition, several areas of Humboldt, including Ferndale, the nearby town of Eureka, lost power.

Local media reported that the Ferndale Bridge over the Eel River outside the town of Ferndale was damaged. In addition, large areas of the Humboldt country suffered power outages. About 72,000 customers, including offices and homes, were cut off.

In 1994, such a strong earthquake occurred at the North Bridge in the northwest of Los Angeles. The magnitude of the earthquake was 6.7 on the Richter scale. The earthquake killed at least 60 people and caused extensive damage.
