China Earthquake | Death Toll Rises to 93 in China Earthquake.

The death toll from an earthquake in southwestern China's Sichuan province has risen to 93. More than two hundred were injured. Besides, many are still missing. News Reuters.


On Monday (September 5) at around 1 pm local time, a strong earthquake of magnitude 6.8 hit the southern part of China. As a result, landslides occurred in various parts of Sichuan Province. It caused extensive damage to the provincial capital Chengdu as well as neighboring provinces. Many areas were turned into ruins.


Officials in the province said the emergency alert level was downgraded after almost all transport, power, and telecommunication services were restored.

The strongest earthquake to hit the province in five years killed 55 people in an area known as Ganxi and another 38 in the city of Yan, state-run media CCTV reported on Tuesday (September 13).


Twenty-five people are still missing, including nine in Luding, the epicenter of the earthquake, and search operations are continuing.


Citing the WeChat account of the Sichuan provincial government, news agency Reuters reported that mourning meetings were held in several cities on Monday (September 12) to commemorate the victims.


Meanwhile, the number of casualties due to the earthquake is increasing. Many people trapped under the rubble have been rescued and sent to safer places. The operation to rescue the rest continues. Helicopters have been deployed.


In the meantime, more than 10,000 residents of Sichuan province have been evacuated to a safe shelter after the earthquake. Temporary camps have been set up under the supervision of the army to treat the injured at various places. Medicines are being provided by the administration.


Rescue operations have been hampered by heavy rains throughout the week. Meanwhile, this week also in some areas of northeastern China, a landslide warning has been issued due to the appearance of new rains.

The strongest earthquake ever recorded hit Sichuan in May 2008. About 70,000 people lost their lives in the 8-magnitude earthquake in Wenchuan.
